About this Property
Coppet’s renown goes back to 1784, the year Jacques Necker bought his castle there, on the shores of Lake Geneva. As well as being of Geneva origin, he was Finance Minister under Louis XVI, king of France. His daughter, Germaine de Staël, driven from France by Napoleon Bonaparte due to her continued opposition to the emperor, established herself in the family castle, which became a meeting place for a number of well-known European personalities and intellectuals.
In the 19th Century, Coppet became a desirable commune, giving rise to the establishment of small domains or secondary residences by the lake. The Renaissance Domain was established in 1834 by Louis Collioud, who had the basic house built in a rural style, together with a small building on its easterly side, housing a pigsty and a chicken coop. From 1845, the property passed into the hands of François Louis Bory, a bourgeois from Coppet, who transformed it into a residence at the end of the XIX Century. The embellishment of the building was to reach its zenith during the 20th Century with the addition of classically orientated architectural decorative elements.
