The Private Residence of Pope Innocenzo X. Palazzo Pamphilj, Rome

Ascending the ramp, one arrives at the front door of the former Papal Apartment, which has a total surface of about 400 sqm. From the entrance hall towards the right there is the first of the four rooms known as the “Old Testament Rooms”. All the rooms feature vaulted ceiling decorated with frescoes representing different scenes from the lives of four great characters from the Old Testament: David, King Solomon, Elia and Daniel. Most of these frescoes are the result of the refined work of Allegrini, and were probably painted around 1660.
Leading back towards the entrance there is a corridor, the celing of which was probably decorated by Ronzi, one of Allegrini's pupils, with frescoes made with the “sott’in su - seen from below” perspective technique. They depict angels and doves carrying an olive branch (the Pamphilj's family emblem). The passage way is well-lit by windows overlooking one of the inner courtyards of Palazzo Pamphilj. The passage leads to the “Room of Vice and Virtue”, decorated with female figures painted by Allegrini.
The next room is the huge “Dido Room”, which was once Pope Innocenzo X's bedroom. A large window with a balcony opens out onto Piazza Navona, offering an incomparable view of Bernini’s “Four Rivers Fountain” and of the amazing perspective of the square itself. The outstanding decorations of the room make de Campos consider it as “… certainly the most ornate and precious room situated on the piano nobile of Palazzo Pamphilj”. The vaulted ceiling, with its circular center and its four lateral sections, is decorated by a series of frescoes by Allegrini, all depicting various episodes from the story of Dido and Aeneus, enclosed within marvelous gilded baroque molding and designs. There is no other work of Allegrini which has been given as much importance as this one: his masterpiece.
