DOWNTIME

Whitefish offers a wide variety of activities year round including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, boating, cycling and kayaking as well as festivals, art fairs, theater, and a vibrant nightlife

Northwestern Montana is a mecca for those who love pristine nature as much as the finer things in life. Sitting by the southern edge of beautiful whitefish lake and at the foot of the Whitefish Range, the charming town of Whitefish boasts the best of both worlds. It offers an abundance of outdoor activities as well as shopping, dining and entertainment.

One can walk from downtown Central Avenue to the beach on the shores of Whitefish Lake. Read a book or simply bask under the glorious blue sky and take in the view of the ski runs on the mountain. If shopping suits your fancy, visit the charming, boutique shops lining the streets and pick up a coffee from the local roaster to enjoy along the way.

While watching the sunset and the people stroll by is enjoyable in the relaxed lifestyle of Whitefish, there is no shortage of music or cultural activities. A vibrant nightlife includes restaurants ranging from sushi to Italian, from gourmet to casual. Bars filled with locals and tourists provide entertainment and friendly conversation for everyone. For the beer connoisseur, there are breweries that create year-round and seasonal artisan beers. Whitefish also has distilleries for those who enjoy gin or other handcrafted spirits. In addition, performances by the local theater company are frequent throughout the year.

Whitefish is home to Whitefish Mountain Resort, the region’s largest ski area. Locals and visitors enjoy the mountain all winter, taking advantage of light powder and tree skiing. While the resort offers terrain fit for any kind of skier, its best known for tree skiing. Visitors to the resort during the summer months can mountain bike, hike, or ride the ski lift to the summit for views of Glacier National Park, or try the thrilling zip-line.

For those who prefer ice skating or cross-country skiing, the local golf course turns into a skier’s paradise in the winter! Ice skating, both indoor and out, as well as trails for snowshoeing and fat-biking are also nearby. While golf is a popular pastime during the summer months in Whitefish, other warm-weather activities include mountain biking or jogging on the extensive Whitefish Trails system, endless road cycling routes, and hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and boating.

There are also many opportunities for backcountry adventures just a short drive away including camping and hiking in Glacier National Park. Just south of Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex offers additional wild, well preserved, and largely untouched lands to explore. Canada is a short distance away including the ski town of Fernie and the stunning town of Banff with its backdrop of jagged mountains.

Whitefish continues to grow as more people discover its many secrets but despite all of the new faces, it maintains the charm and friendliness it's known for.
