Lake Tahoe’s Storied Shakespeare Ranch Offered At $69 Million

Lakeside Family Compound Boasts Seven Residences, 5,111 Square Foot Entertainment Barn, Lavish Indoor Pool House and Equestrian Facilities

Glenbrook, NevadaShakespeare Ranch, a 129-acre property on the shores of cerulean Lake Tahoe, is offered for sale by Oliver Luxury Real Estate, an exclusive Affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate. The asking price is $69 million.

The ranch, originally built in 1861, is to be sold for only the third time in its history. Its name comes from a rock outcropping, which original settlers to the area thought bore a striking resemblance to the English bard. The theme infuses the ranch with guest cabins named, “To Be,” “Not to Be,” and a guest house dubbed “King Lear.”

Property highlights include:

  • Legacy privileges such as horse stabling on the property and expansive water rights, both of which have become highly regulated in the intervening years
  • Two hundred feet of lake frontage with access to a community pier with boat lift and valet to 5 private deeded buoys
  • Residences and guest cabins – seven in all – for a total of 15 bedrooms, 16 full baths and seven kitchens
  • Grand pool house with indoor pool and steam spa, fireside dining, gym, executive office suite and outdoor spa
  • A massive art loft/studio located above the stables is accessed through its own entry and easily converted to a business conference room or home theater
  • Sprawling 5,111 square foot Entertainment Barn that features a wine room, full saloon-style bar, arcade, event space and professional catering kitchen
  • Root cellar dating back to the 1800’s converted to a quaint wine tasting room
  • Ranch amenities include stabling with paddocks for up to six horses, a greenhouse, vegetable gardens and enclosures for small animals
  • The Glenbrook Golf Club, the oldest course in Nevada with holes overlooking the lake, is located inside the gated Glenbrook Community with membership available to residents
  • Home to the “Glenbrook Rodeo,” a historic tradition revived by ranch owners in 2000, the annual event features rodeo competition, dinner prepared by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, and past headlining acts such as Lionel Richie, Robin Williams and Jay Leno

“The property is endowed with grandfathered entitlements which are impossible to replicate,” says Claudia Thompson, who is representing the ranch. “For instance, horses are no longer allowed on private property in Lake Tahoe but you can keep your horses at Shakespeare Ranch. The land comes with rich water rights. Lake frontage is at a premium making a holding this large a rarity. Finally, the current owners have been such diligent stewards in maintaining this pristine area to the highest levels of integrity.”

This historic ranch boasts nearly 35,000 square feet of improvements including plans and renderings for a new main residence made available upon sale.

The property is located in the gated community of Glenbrook, founded in 1860 as one of the oldest settlements in Lake Tahoe and Nevada. The property enjoys the state’s tax benefits (no estate tax, no personal tax, low property tax) and is located just a four-hour drive from Silicon Valley and under an hour by air.
