DOWNTIME

Porto Ercole has been a favorite holiday destination for Roman and Milanese residents for decades. The charming seaside town is renown for its beautiful beaches, fine dining, and exceptional water activities.

Porto Ercole is beautifully situated in Maremma in southern Tuscany, a unique historic region that has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years.

Porto Ercole appears today much like the idyllic fishing village of its past. It is still enclosed by a boundary wall, which is accessed via Porta Pisana.

Despite its Roman origin, the area did not rise in significance until the Middle Ages. In this period, the area belonged to the Abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome, and in the thirteenth century passed into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. Finally, in the 1500s, it became a Spanish dominion.

Besides its natural beauty, the charm of Porto Ercole is derived from the imposing Spanish forts that were built in the sixteenth century. Forte Filippo, the Rock, and Forte Stella are three perfectly preserved fortifications from the time where visitors can still enjoy spectacular ocean views.

This picturesque seaside town has been a favorite holiday destination for Roman and Milanese residents for decades. Breathtaking sandy beaches abound, including Le Viste, la Spiaggia Lunga, and l'Acqua Dolce. Also in Porto Ercole is the Marina of Cala Galera, frequented by celebrities and yachters. The area also boasts a vibrant nightlife with a variety of fine restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and hotels.
