Monument for the future

You can only build a monument for the future with a lot of care and attention. Architect Sjoerd Soeters and the current owner perfected every detail in the modern urban villa in the heart of Bergen. The doors are now opened for a new generation of inhabitants.

‘A modern city home which will last for at least two hundred years, as a monument for the future.’ That was the assignment given to architect Sjoerd Soeters for the design of a special villa in Bergen. The residents would think along very intensively in the design process, which involved a weekly consultation for a whole year. ‘Everything is in balance. We cannot think of anything which is not right. Except maybe a missing window in the front door’, says the owner. Those passing the villa on the quiet cycling lane will immediately be drawn by the stately chimneys on both sides of the roof covered with English ceramic slate. Peeking inside is not an option, because the massive nine metres long horizontal windows at the front side are placed in such a way that the view to the inside is limited. This provides the residents with a lot of privacy, while at the same time being able to enjoy the view themselves as much as possible.

The lower floor is generous in size and high, but still comes across as cosy thanks to the many corners and the natural light which flows inside in abundance. The ‘shot holes’ are remarkable, small, deep square windows allowing you to peek outside and which provide a beautiful play of light everywhere in the space. Another well thought out architectural touch is the sheltered patio, caused by a recess in a V-shape in the rear façade. As soon as the sliding doors open, the inside and outside transition seamlessly. The kitchen and conservatory in the wings on both sides bathe in light all year round. The office at the bay window at the front can be closed off with a sliding door. After work is done, it is pleasant to reside by the fireplace, which can be used both with wood and gas. The television has been smartly hidden away on top behind an electrically openable wall. A bookcase of a metre in height designed by Soeters is a real eye catcher, on the other hand. Behind the closet you can find the stairs (with playful wooden ‘noses’, characteristic for Soeters’ craft) to the first floor. Those preferring the lift go through the entrance.

The bedrooms and offices on the first and second floor are spacious and bright. The additional value of the architect is also demonstrated on the landing: no unsightly row of doors but a wooden wall finished with beautiful ornamental slats which subtly provides access to various quarters, including a washing area, a guestroom, the lift, the ascent to the second floor and storage space. It is nice to communicate with the people on the lower floor from the mezzanine with glass balustrade. The current residents value this openness highly, because they never feel lonely in the large house this way. The villa is there also – partially also due to the four spacious bedrooms and the lift – suitable for both families and couples looking for a future-proof place to live and write history.

In the basement there is – in addition to a spacious wine cellar – the garage with room for four cars. But the ‘machine room’ might speak to the imagination even more. In this ‘cockpit’ all modern conveniences are directed. Solar collectors and a heat pump ensure sustainable energy, the home automation system and the central vacuuming system are a reliable assistance. The balanced ventilation system, the high degree of insulation and the floor heating that can also be used for cooling the Spanish marble all ensure a comfortable climate. The location of the villa is also pleasant. The lively centre of the convivial village Bergen is located at a small distance away, just like museum Kranenburgh and the special fifteenth century church ruins. Finally, but certainly worth the mention: beach and water are accessible by bicycle within fifteen minutes and the Bergerbos located on dunes is located right behind the house. In short: enough elements to please residents in a modern-monumental way.
