DOWNTIME

Having mastered the art of fine living, Barbados offers those who have not yet experienced such, the opportunity to do so 365 days a year. White sand beaches, authentic fine dining, and a rich culture full of history and charm all await anyone looking to relax and unwind. Luxury shopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, vibrant entertainment and an exciting nightlife make up the long list of activities available for one to enjoy.

For the past 25 years, Barbados has been the international destination of choice for the most sophisticated travellers and the astute real estate investor. Discerning visitors—from British Royalty to American rockstars—enjoy the white sandy beaches and cool sunshine of Barbados’ shores. The island offers some of the most coveted ocean views in the Caribbean where luxury homes have taken address. With an excellent infrastructure and a regulatory system that provides a suitable environment for business and investment, this small island nation ticks all the right boxes for a vacation home.

A blend of time-honored architecture and contemporary interior design are typical attributes of most properties within the luxury residential market in Barbados. Coral stone structures, spacious open plan living and terraces that bring the outdoors in, are common features of each property. Most properties tend to feature an outdoor pool as an added design trait but given the ease of access to many beaches; it is typically an added luxury. Most master-planned communities are situated within close proximity to a variety of restaurants, bars and entertainment in an effort to integrate buyers into the local culture and encourage economic activity.

Unlike many of the other Caribbean islands, Barbados’ topography is mainly flat, making it relatively easy to access much of the island. Another factor that offers a sense of ease to mobility around the island is Barbados’ highly developed and extensive road network. Described as one of the more modern and well developed airports in the Caribbean, the recently modernized Grantley Adams International Airport boasts of direct flights to other major international ports of entry including London, New York, Miami, and Toronto.

Apart from the numerous lifestyle attractions on the island, The UN Human Development Index ranks Barbados #41 in the world, the highest of all Caribbean countries, and the smallest tourism destination in the rankings. The World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2011 Competitiveness Study ranked Barbados #28 internationally, the highest ranking in the English speaking Caribbean and 35 places above Jamaica, the next highest ranked Caribbean island. The island has also developed into a major international center for international business and financial services as a result of low tax rates, double taxation agreements, and exchange of information treaties.

Recreation and Amenities

Golf

Increasingly regarded as one of the finer locations for a golf vacation, Barbados’ brilliant year round sunshine and world-class championship courses make it one of the most sought after destinations for the recreational golfer or the more serious golf enthusiast. A few of the more popular courses on island include the Sandy Lane, Apes Hill, and Royal Westmoreland courses.

Polo

Reintroduced to Barbados in the early 1900s, the origins of this internationally renowned sport still remain a topic of debate amongst China, India, and Iran. The first games ever played in Barbados are claimed to have occurred in 1884, while historical authors provide dates as early as the 5th century and the 1st century for the origin of the sport.

A number of new polo fields have been developed across the island, several of which are located within close proximity to the luxury real estate developments or with the polo field as an added amenity to the master-planned community. At present there are four polo fields in Barbados located at:
      --   Waterhall/Apes Hill, St. James
--   Barbados Polo Club, Holders, St. James
--   Clifton Polo Field, St. Thomas
      --   Lion Castle, St. Thomas

Horseracing

Home to one of the oldest tracks in this hemisphere; The Garrison Savannah is a venue for what is known as the ‘Sport of Kings.’ Apart from the recreational and fun-loving entertainment aspect of the sport, a large part of horseracing has evolved to become a socially integrating activity where the food, wine, and mingling is as integral to the event as the races and the betting. The major event on the horseracing calendar in Barbados is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup.
