New York, New York (March 8, 2021) — Laurel Hill boasts the rarest of provenances, previously owned by Abby Rockefeller Mauzé, the granddaughter of oil magnate, John D. Rockefeller. Ms. Rockefeller Mauzé was a beloved and generous philanthropist to myriad causes, however, her enduring legacy is perhaps Greenacre Park, an oasis of trees, flowers and a 25-foot cascade of water off 51st Street in New York City. In 1971, when dedicating the park — with land she purchased, landscaped and still endows — she said her hope was that “people will find here some moments of serenity in this busy world.”
That same sentiment seemingly drove her vision for Laurel Hill, a resplendent estate celebrating Tudor architecture. Ms. Rockefeller Mauzé purchased the home and proceeded to procure neighboring lots, numbering 10 over time, to create her wooded 57-acre sanctuary appointed with two miles of walking trails and an abundance of gardens.
Current owner William J. Catacosinos, who purchased Laurel Hill in 1978 from the estate of Abby Rockefeller Mauzé, proved to be the ideal steward. He completely modernized the property while honoring its enduring legacy.
Ms. Coumou, executive director of Christie’s International Real Estate, said: “Laurel Hill’s multiple structures welcome multigenerational living and staff accomodations, with the potential to incorporate the next steward’s vision for the property. The price point of US$18,500,000 is a rare value proposition to acquire a property of this scope.” The first time the property was introduced to the market in September of 2018, the price was US$30,000,000.
Laurel Hill’s 57 acres is completely fenced for ultimate privacy and entered through stately wrought-iron gates and a three-quarter-mile drive lined with stands of beech trees and wending through a forest of deciduous hardwoods with their thick leafy canopies. The drive ends in a cobblestone motor court, landscaped with azalea and magnolia bushes with blooming perennials bursting with color. The historic 10,000-square-foot Tudor manor, dating to 1928, presides over the property against a backdrop of rolling manicured lawns.
The home is introduced by a reception vestibule looking beyond to a walled courtyard garden through double French doors. Upon entering further, visitors are greeted by an airy foyer with a staircase curving to the second level. Long-enjoyed for elegant entertaining, the dining room easily seats 20. Most of the home’s reception rooms, including an elegant sunken living salon, open to flagstone patios — some covered and some open air.
The first-floor office and sitting area is paneled in walnut with custom cabinetry and with access to the estate’s beautiful outdoors. There are seven wood-burning fireplaces throughout the primary residence.
Said Mr. Meier: “Palladian windows flood the interiors with light while complementing perfectly the original architectural details, such as antique wainscoting, ornate wood carvings, original brass fixtures and marble fireplace mantels.”
The second level houses five bedroom suites, including the opulent owner’s suite, as well as a separate four-bedroom wing for staff.
Additional structures include:
- A pool house, with three bedrooms and another wood-burning fireplace in the lounge, that opens to a brick deck surrounding the oversized pool
- A three-bedroom guest cottage
- A carriage house with a five-car garage and mechanic pit, plus a second-story two-bedroom apartment above
- A root cellar to preserve jarred preserves, fruits and vegetables the old-fashioned way.
There is also a tennis court, a sport court and a second garage to house a total of nine vehicles on the property.
Laurel Hill is in proximity to fine private schools, universities, hospitals, country clubs and religious houses of worship. LaGuardia, JFK and MacArthur airports are 45 minutes away.
