Ken Jacobs, Affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, Achieves National Sales Record With The Fairfax Mansion, Australia’s Most Significant Estate

Stewardship of this historic Sydney mansion assured by Scott Farquhar, 37-year-old co-founder of tech giant Atlassian

Sydney, Australia – After 126 years of continuous ownership by the family of the Fairfax Media dynasty, the harbor-front estate known as Elaine has sold.

Exclusive listing agent Ken Jacobs, of Christie’s International Real Estate, declined to comment on the details of the sale but said, “I am delighted with the outcome - it is the perfect match for both buyer and home, as the entire estate will be revitalized and remain in one ownership for many years to come. This result has been the desire of the owner and Sydney-siders alike.”

Owner John B Fairfax stated, “This is an emotional day. I have sold a home that has been in the Fairfax family since 1891. I am delighted it has been purchased in one line to an Australian family.”

The 37-year-old buyer and co-founder of tech giant Atlassian, Scott Farquhar, said, “We’re thrilled with the purchase and honoured to take over the Elaine estate in its entirety from the Fairfax family. There is a certain nostalgia in knowing that multiple generations of an iconic Australian family have grown up on these lawns and we very much look forward to raising our family here.”

Situated about 5kms from the city center on 6,986sqm (1.72 acres) with approximately 43.5m frontage on Seven Shillings Beach, the state is beyond compare. Erected in 1863, in the grand Victorian mansion style, Elaine's ballroom, numerous balconies boasting stunning Sydney Harbour views, and rolling gardens have played host to a bevy of important guests across four generations of ownership by one of Australia's greatest media families. The three-story mansion’s exteriors include sloping lawns extending to Seven Shillings Beach, a grass tennis court, sandstone walls and paths, and five heritage-listed, century-old trees.

“Ken Jacobs and Christie's International Real Estate were honored to be selected by the Fairfax family to represent them in this important sale,” said Zackary Wright, Executive Director, Christie’s International Real Estate. “Mr. Jacobs, a member of the Christie's real estate network for over seventeen years, was recently honored in London as the Global Affiliate of the Year for mid-sized markets. His extraordinary talent for negotiating successful outcomes for buyers and sellers alike, his exemplary client service, and this latest record-setting transaction seal his worldwide reputation as a leader in the marketing and sale of high-end real estate."
