Salterbridge House, an historic estate on 136 verdant and secluded acres in Waterford, Ireland, offered for US$3,642,681
Built in 1751, the estate has been offered for sale only once and sustained through the centuries to retain its historic provenance with updates for modern living
New York, New York (August 26, 2020) — Salterbridge House offers its next owner the opportunity to purchase a rare piece of Irish history, as well as an oasis of serenity located in Waterford’s fabled Blackwater Valley. Property highlights are a primary residence of 15,600 square feet with eight bedrooms and additional staff quarters; the 5,000 square-foot Steward’s House, with five more bedrooms, and two gate houses, one offering an additional three bedrooms.
There is also a stable yard, farmyard and two-acre walled garden, offering options for a sustainable farm-to-table lifestyle. The grounds also include a tennis court, six acres of gardens and 98 acres of agricultural land.
Salterbridge House is represented by Roseanne De Vere Hunt of Sherry FitzGerald, the exclusive Affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in Ireland.
Said Charlotte Delaney of Christie’s International Real Estate: “Salterbridge House is quintessentially Ireland. The grounds are picturesque, the historic home has been maintained to the highest standards, and the estate offers horseback riding, hunting, and walking in the Knockmealdown mountains. Golf is, of course, nearby, as are cycling, a burgeoning foodie scene and top-notch schools. As recent events have underscored the ease of remote working, Salterbridge house presents an ideal opportunity for extended family living.”
Salterbridge House was built in 1751, on land acquired from the Lismore Castle, a Gothic landmark in Ireland hosting generations of European royalty and now a preserved destination. Salterbridge’s original residence was expanded in the early 1800s, and then again some years later. The date 1849 is carved into the courtyard arch and 1884 into the oak panels in the hall, noting these restorations. Throughout its history, the house has been sold only once, to the family of the present owners, in 1947.
The estate resonates the unique social life of this famous region. The main home is introduced by a tasteful period feature, the elegant and commanding double staircase.
The dining room is ideal for formal entertaining. Excellent acoustics of its Victorian wood paneled hallway lends itself to music recitals, such as those hosted here during the yearly Blackwater Valley Opera Festival.
Meanwhile, the elegant reception rooms — including drawing, tea and morning rooms — are a wonderful backdrop for more formal events as well as relaxed entertainment, filled with sunshine in summer or warmed by generous fireplaces in winter. The library is a welcome respite as is the homey kitchen with breakfast nook. Floor to ceiling windows flood the historic estate with natural light.
The gardens are another signature feature of the estate. Some specimen trees and shrubs date back to the early 19th century when the house was enlarged and include four Irish yews and one of the largest cork oaks in the country. Swathes of primroses, daffodils and bluebells are offset by magnificent magnolias, rhododendrons, and camellias. The gardens are so magnificent, they are included in the Waterford Garden Trail. Before the Second World War, the lands were a major supplier of daffodils to the Savoy Hotel in London, and their blooms still cover the lawns every spring.
Said Ms. De Vere Hunt of Sherry FitzGerald: “It’s a great pleasure to bring this fine estate on the Blackwater Valley to the market. An elegant residence with Steward’s House, two gate houses, walled garden, stable yard and tennis court, it offers the complete lifestyle package. As buyers now look for low density living, a safe location, away from cities, this offers a wonderful home to bring up a family.”
