The 2022 FIFA World Cup is underway in Qatar, uniting soccer fans from all over the globe to cheer on their favorite team. Over the next month, an estimated five billion people will watch 32 nations compete for a place in the final at Lusail Stadium, just north of the capital, Doha.

Will it be the 2018 champions, France, or the runner-up, Croatia? Could it be the bookies’ favorite, Brazil, or will a new winner emerge?

Herewith, Luxury Defined spotlights a collection of luxurious homes, some with soccer pitches dedicated to the most popular game on the planet—and a few other sporting pursuits.

Consider the manor in Bermuda or the modernist villa near Lisbon, Portugal, each with its own private soccer pitch. Whatever you prefer, these are indeed beautiful homes for this sporting life.

This opulent estate is in the leafy, gated environs of Greenwood, just south of Uptown Charlotte, the city’s corporate and financial hub. Don Evans, AIA architect and founder of the Florida-based Evans Group, designed the home in the style of a Palm Beach Mediterranean palazzo.

The stucco façade, accented with limestone, sits under a hand-crafted roof. The ornate interior finishes include beautiful white-washed tile floors and hand-carved limestone fireplaces.

The living and entertaining areas include a formal dining room, large gourmet kitchen, wood-panelled library with study, a lavishly appointed drawing room with a saltwater aquarium, and a pirate-themed game room. The aquatic theme continues outside with a serene koi pond.

There are eight bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, and a powder room. Two bedrooms are on the main floor. The opulent owner’s suite provides separate bathrooms, fireplace, steam shower, sauna, and two large, custom closets.

The features don’t end there. This suite also has a second office, recording studio, gym, and private terrace with outdoor shower and bathtub, and waterfall.

The rear gardens are a private oasis with a classically inspired saltwater pool, a fenced sports court for tennis and full-court basketball, and a putting green—with sand traps. There’s also a six-vehicle garage for the car collector.

This contemporary seaside villa is in a private community on Portugal’s beautiful Tróia Peninsula, about 30 miles south of Lisbon. The residence offers 3,767 square feet of luxuriously appointed interiors with five bedrooms and five full bathrooms.

Sunlight streams into the main floor reception rooms through vast walls of acoustically and thermally insulated glass. Double-height ceilings and gallery walls provide the perfect frame for large-scale paintings and sculpture.

The main living area is divided into two distinct zones: a formal dining space and an elegant piano lounge. Adjacent is a stylish contemporary kitchen, fully equipped with top-of-the-range appliances.

Two bedrooms occupy this level, with a further three on the upper floor. All have superb sea views, including the owner’s suite, with its Jacuzzi and private terrace.

The outdoor spaces are worthy of a boutique hotel. The centerpiece is a heated pool alongside an alfresco dining area shaded by olive trees. A surf-inspired beach bar and a mini soccer pitch add a sense of fun.

The recreational options don’t end there. Steps away, the beach awaits and one of Europe’s finest golf courses, Tróia Golf designed by Robert Trent Jones.

3. Chelston on Grape Bay Beach in Paget Parish, Bermuda

Chelston, a magnificent, 14-acre beachfront estate overlooking Grape Bay Beach, is an integral part of Bermuda’s heritage. The stately, 10,000-square-foot main house commands vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the city of Hamilton.

The gated compound includes three guest cottages (each with three bedrooms); a manager’s house (with two bedrooms), and a beach pavilion.

The parklike grounds offer myriad recreational opportunities. In addition to the 75- by 40-foot zero-edge pool (with a beautiful pool pavilion), there’s a croquet lawn and plenty of space for soccer and sports of all sorts.

Chelston also has a fascinating history: The property was originally designed and built between 1939 and 1941 for C. P. Dubbs, inventor of the Dubbs Process (a crude oil thermal “cracking” technology).

From 1964 to 1999, Chelston served as the official Bermuda residence of the U.S. consul general, who received a who’s who of guests, including U.S. presidents, international dignitaries, and celebrities.

In 1999, the current owners purchased the property and embarked on a three-year renovation with an international team of architects and artisans. The result is a private family beachfront compound of the highest order.

This elegant country house has a bucolic setting behind the dunes of Rockanje Beach in the Dutch province of South Holland.

The cedar and stone exterior is reminiscent of a rustic mountain lodge, built to weather the storms. The interiors are thoroughly modern, with the living and dining areas, and kitchen interconnected.

Built in 1961 and completely updated in 2021, the home has all the creature comforts: a billiards room, cocktail bar, dream kitchen, private office, and vast media lounge for watching the big game.

Sliding glass doors reveal the tranquil outdoor spaces: wide verandahs, canopy-covered terraces, and a summer kitchen and bar overlooking a heated lap pool and hot tub.

Just beyond the pool deck are the regulation tennis court and parklike grounds, an idyllic private sanctuary with towering trees, verdant lawns, and a natural swimming pond—all just steps from the surf.

The sporting amenities include a fenced, floodlit, regulation tennis court with a north-south orientation. It doubles as a multi-use sports court for basketball or five-a-side soccer, or, perhaps, the ultimate pickleball tournament. A deck with a barbecue provides the perfect viewing platform.

When it’s time to relax, residents can unwind in the sauna or sit back with a sundowner by the pool. Large windows and sliding doors at the rear bring in the natural light and the canyon views. Or retire to one of six comfortable bedrooms, including a primary suite with a cozy wood-burning hearth.
