Caletti Custom Cycles

After 10 years of crafting California’s coolest rides, John Caletti finally throws open the doors of his renowned custom bicycle studio in Santa Cruz

I just thought to have a custom-made bike would be the coolest thing,” says John Caletti from his base in Santa Cruz, California. He still does. In business for 10 years, Caletti says it’s been a “fun ride.” Fun is a recurring theme for Caletti, who begins the process of handcrafting a bike with a one-to-one interview, in person if possible. The finished wheels reflect the personality and style of the customer – frames come in steel or titanium – and from first call to delivery it takes seven to eight months and costs between $5,000-$8,000.

The standalone quality of Caletti’s bikes is echoed in his color chart: Johnny Cash Black, Red Hot, Root Beer… But, of course, buyers can ask for any color they’d like.

For his favorite part of making the bikes, Caletti grabs a blowtorch: “Welding is so much fun. It’s like magic melting super-thin tubes together.” And the most rewarding? “Making someone happier, and enhancing a cycling life.”

That’s not all – Caletti has a conscience and participates in the 1% For The Planet initiative, in which companies donate at least one per cent of their net revenues to environmental organizations.
