Gone with the Wind actress Ann Rutherford’s Beverly Hills estate, as well as the most-expensive single-family home ever sold in Hawaii and a spectacular Monte Carlo apartment were among the top fourth-quarter sales reported by the Affiliates of Christie’s International Real Estate.

Originally listed for US$70 million, this 15-acre waterfront compound known as Hale ‘Ae Kai, sold in November 2018 for US$46.1 million, becoming the most expensive single-family home ever sold in Hawaii. The listing agent, Neal Norman of Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers, represented both the buyer and seller in this transaction. The estate, near the picturesque town of Kilauea, features a Balinese-inspired main house, composed of four pavilions connected by covered walkways and more than 10,000 square feet of living space. The grounds offer sweeping views of white sand beaches, the historic Kilauea Lighthouse, and volcanic mountains, and include expansive outdoor entertaining spaces and a farm with exotic palm, citrus, and coconut trees. A private pathway leads down to the secluded, beautiful Secret Beach.

Inspired by the Art Deco and Art Moderne periods in Paris, the historic French Revival–style estate overlooking the Los Angeles Country Club golf course in Beverly Hills has been meticulously modernized. The elegant 10,402-square-foot residence provides five bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, and two half bathrooms. Among the ornate architectural details are polished Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann-inspired paneling; 1920s and ’30s Parisian art glass; and 200-year-old Chinese wallpaper. The picturesque grounds, graced with an oval pool and pool house with wet bar, gym, and a hammam, evoke the grandeur of a bygone era.
