Cos Cob encompasses just under 4.5 square miles of land in the southwest corner of the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut. For a time, this quiet coastal enclave was the cradle of American Impressionism. The Cos Cob Art Colony flourished from 1882 until 1920. Its earliest members were America's foremost Impressionist painters: John Henry Twachtman, Julian Alden Weir, Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, Henry Fitch Taylor, and Robert Reid. Their en plein air paintings of Cos Cob, its Colonial saltbox houses, pastoral scenes, and coastal landscapes are among the finest American Impressionist works. The center of the colony, the “Old House,” is a museum these days, but Cos Cob retains its timeless charm.
