South East England, One of the Most Desirable Places to Live in the UK

article slide

South East England is one of the largest regions in England, at 19,095 square kilometres, and has the highest population, with 8.6 million residents. It is made up of eight counties: Berkshire, Hampshire & Isle of Wight, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent. Whilst varied, and each offering something unique, these counties all share a common theme: proximity to London. This has boosted the economy of the region, which is the strongest outside London, and has encouraged many businesses to choose it as its base.

There are eight cities in South East England, as well as a vast number of thriving towns and villages, dotted amongst the region’s beautiful rolling countryside. Among these is Oxford, home to one the world’s best universities, and Brighton, a unique coastal city with an impressive number of independent businesses, shops and eateries.

The counties of the South East are all well connected, both to London and to the rest of the country. It is attractive to those wanting to have the amenities, employment and culture of London on their doorstep, but who equally want to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the fresh air and space of the countryside. London Gatwick airport, located in East Sussex, is the second busiest in the UK, and served over two million customers last year.

Despite being relatively densely populated, the South East is home to a number of vast National Parks, including the New Forest, a 500 square kilometre forest where wild ponies roam, the South Downs, the Seven Sisters Country Park and the Ashdown Forest. The South East is great for outdoor enthusiasts; Hampshire in particular is blessed with and abundance of crystal clear chalk streams brimming with trout, and the rolling hills present in the majority of the region provide virtually limitless opportunities for walking, cycling or just enjoying the view.

300 kilometres of beautiful coastline run from Southampton all the way round to North Kent, varying from buzzing Brighton to sleepy fishing ports, via the striking snow white chalky cliffs of the Isle of Wight and Dover. The coastline is well enjoyed by the local residents, a great opportunity to get out and about and observe the thriving wildlife.

The South East is one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, with properties achieving significantly higher values than their counterparts elsewhere. This popularity is no doubt down to the wonderful combination of beautiful countryside and coastline, a good number of cities and large towns in addition to being close to London, and good schools.
