An easy commute, situated approximately 50 kilometers, or 31 miles, from Rio de Janeiro, Petropolis is a charming city of mountains and valleys with attractions to please the most varied tastes. During the second half of the 19th Century, Petropolis had all the glamour of a Royal Court and was an important political center that remained the state capital of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903. Besides the climate and surroundings, the main attractions of this area are the former Summer Palace of the Brazilian Emperors - which is now a museum specializing in Imperial history and memorabilia - and the Crystal Palace, a structure made entirely of glass plates and metallic supports. Founded by German immigrants, Petropolis is named after Pedro II, emperor of Brazil from 1831 to 1889, for whom the charming location was a favorite summer residence.
