À propos de The Jewel in the Crown

Universally acknowledged as the chicest and most exclusive community in the world, the area surrounding Gstaad is called the Saanenland in honor of the historic 'Grade A' protected village of Saanen. At its main intersection sits the villa Schlössli, a classical masterpiece worthy of its paramount position.

The ground floor gallery features a magnificent 17th century 'old wood' Swiss ceiling, an 18th century French parrefeuille terracotta tile floor, frescOed walls inspired by the Palazzo Medici (Rome), eight huge windows with triple exposures and eleven wrought iron chandeliers inspired by the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul). In the main entrance hall, the 13th century wall is the oldest standing structure in the entire region. Discovered during the Schlössli's refurbishment in 2003, it prompted Bern's Archeological Society to finance a study of the site and pay for restoration. Examples of the stairwell's superb decorative details are: splendid 15th century arabesques designed for the Scala dei Giganti in the Doge's Palace (Venice) on the marble steps, and three monumental columns comprised of hundreds of Travertine marble tiles each.

On the first floor, we find a paneled hallway leading to an expansive library/dining room with identical 19th century boiserie; a luxurious 32 square meter master bedroom with ten wall-to-wall closets that are hidden behind carved-wood paneling and access to a huge south-facing terrace; an eat-in kitchen with Italian cabinetry, state-of-the-art German appliances, and access to a balcony that overlooks Saanen's central plaza. The master and guest bathrooms are fitted with top-of-the-line Alessi fixtures. Notably, the flooring throughout is extremely rare 18th century parquet de Versailles made of pine.

On the second floor: Bracketed by trompe l'Oeil panels recreating the brick façade of the Doge's Palace, the salon's five meter high frescOed ceiling is a retrospective of many of Renaissance Venice's greatest artists, such as Giorgione, Carpaccio, Uccello, Mensueti and Vivarini. The 18th century marquetry doors and boiserie in the salon and adjoining bedrooms maintain an incredibly high standard not seen since the great Renzo Mongiardino.
