What Is the History of Montclair?

What began as a small village 15 miles east of Denver was incorporated as the town of Montclair in 1888. The town was named by its co-founder, Matthias P. Cochrane, after Montclair, New Jersey. Another co-founder, Baron Walter von Richthofen, was a Prussian nobleman and the uncle of Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary World War I fighter pilot known as the Red Baron. Baron Walter von Richthofen built one of the most historically significant homes in Denver: Richthofen Castle. Modeled after his ancestral home in Germany, the magnificent castellated mansion was designed in 1887 by architects Jules Jacques Benedict and Maurice Bixco.

After the crash of the silver market in 1893, von Richthofen promoted Montclair as a health retreat. In 1903, Denver annexed the neighborhood and built a system of parkways and boulevards and landscaped the town with trees, fountains, and monuments. Thanks to Montclair preservationist Jane Smith, the town was designated as a historic district in 1975.
