Originally settled in 1849, the Township of Mahwah, situated on the New Jersey and New York State border, encompasses 26 square miles, and is the largest municipality in Bergen County. At the last turn of the century, it became a second home destination for wealthy industrialists to escape the city. Due to its rich past, Mahwah boasts several historic homes and estates, the most notable of which is The Crocker Mansion, built in 1907 for George Crocker, the son of Southern Pacific Railroad magnate, Charles Crocker. The name, Mahwah, is from the Lenni Lenape Native American Indian word, “mawewi”, meaning Meeting Place, or a Place Where Paths Meet.
