The rolling hills and farmland with quintessential stone walls spread throughout the bucolic town of North Salem are some of the key features that this country town in Westchester, New York provides. North Salem is a private getaway spot, perfect for raising a family with children and pets. It is not uncommon to see a tractor slowly roll by the manicured lawns of the colonial houses and also see a Porsche whoosh by all within the hour. People joke that there are, “more horses than people.” The once filled pasturelands with cattle are now mostly taken over with horses to equestrians’ delight.

North Salem is Horse Country

Horses and barns can be seen pretty much at every corner one turns. One of the most notable barns in North Salem is Old Salem Farm (OSF). At the end of the summer, OSF hosts their annual Summer Jumper Classic show. This event not only draws Olympians but also locals, weekenders, and other people from neighboring towns as spectators and competitors, which encompasses the heterogeneous culture of North Salem. There are also riding lessons available for all ages at other equestrian facilities near the area.

If one is interested in checking out the beautiful bridle paths this town has to offer, Golden’s Bridge Hounds (GBH), a fox hunting farm, is only 45 minutes away. The extended GBH community includes Masters of Foxhounds Association & Foundation, North Salem Bridle Trails Association, and North Salem Open Land Foundation. North Salem has approximately 1,222 acres under preservation. Taking advantage of the country views on horseback is always a great activity to partake in.

Recreational Activities in North Salem

Hiking and walking trails are spread throughout the town featuring beautiful pastoral sights. Apple picking is a popular activity for dates or families at the Outhouse Orchards and Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard in Croton Falls. The Hammond Museum is also a peaceful retreat for people to wander into and explore. It houses Japanese art and a seven acre Japanese stroll garden.

Also, the iconic Balanced Rock is a site one might see when driving or walking past Route 116 next to an old barn. One can’t miss this huge rock balanced on top of smaller rocks because of its massive size. There’s some controversy about the origins of the rock; some people believe that the rock is a from the last receding glacier from about 10,000 years ago and others believe that the rock is evidence of the Druids. The first explanation is the more probable one.

Dining in North Salem

Dining out is easy when some of New York City’s best resides right in town. VOX, one of Jean Georges’ restaurant’s and One Twenty One, Beck Bolender (former Jean Georges su-chef) are two favorites. One Twenty One is a great place to eat with family and friends—121 even has their own kids menu.

Schools in North Salem

North Salem is an intimate, close-knit community with one public high school in town. North Salem Middle School/ High School has just under 700 students and has an impressive academia repertoire. Students have the option of participating in Advanced Placement coursework and exams, which many students take full advantage of. The strong AP participation rate is 75%. The Westchester Exceptional Childrens School, private/non-profit school, also located in North Salem is dedicated to serving special needs students in New York, Connecticut and NYC.

Commuting Options in North Salem

North Salem is tucked away in the North East corner of Westchester just 55 miles outside of Manhattan. It’s a short MetroNorth train ride away. One can stop at the station, Purdy’s or Croton Falls. By car, North Salem is a little over an hour from Manhattan.
