New City, an affluent hamlet in the city of Clarkstown, New York, has a distinguished history, ample green space and parks, and plenty of local charm. The Past of and the Future for New City, New York

New City was established in 1798. In 1918, Paramount Pictures founder and president Adolph Zukor purchased the 300-acre Mountain View Farm, which by 1920, encompassed 800 acres of land, including an 18-hole course designed by legendary golf course architect A. W. Tillinghast. The estate hosted a who’s who of entertainers and actors, including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Clark Gable, and Charlie Chaplin. What originally attracted Zukor to New City were the rolling hills, beautiful views, and relaxing lifestyle, only 30 miles from Manhattan. By the early 1920s, New City was on the map, becoming a draw for artists, writers, and artists. The painter and muralist Henry Varnum Poor; the playwright Maxwell Anderson; and the composer Kurt Weill and his wife, the actress Lotte Lenya, lived on South Mountain Road in New City. The town would remain largely rural until the 1950s, when construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades Interstate Parkway, opened the region for suburban development.

Today, Mountain View Farm and Adolph Zukor’s original 18-hole golf course is the Paramount Country Club. Formerly known as the Dellwood Country Club, the club was purchased in 2009 by Mandelbaum family, who have since made substantial improvements, including the restoration of the historic course and the clubhouse, which is a popular venue for social events.
